Microsoft acknowledges Xbox problem with disc drive

Microsoft has acknowledged that owners of its new Xbox One console are experiencing problems with the disc drive. Some users say the drive is making very loud noises when they try to insert a disc and in some cases is not reading discs at all. Microsoft says only a very small number of users are affected. The Xbox One was launched on Friday and sold more than one million units in the first 24 hours. More than 150 people contacted Kotaku, a... [read news]

What does Alec Baldwin have to do with cloud computing?

What was Alec Baldwin doing at a cloud computing conference in San Francisco? Delighting fans (and getting paid to do so) in an effort to smooth over his most recent public relations flap in which the 30 Rock actor was accused of yelling a gay slur at a photographer. Baldwin disputes the account, but the details mattered little here at the Salesforce.com (CRM) Dreamforce conference in San Francisco, where the actor received a warm reception... Opposition to mobile phone chat on planes

A proposal to allow mobile phone calls during commercial flights has met opposition. The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has suggested that passengers should be allowed to make calls once a plane reaches 10,000 feet. But one petition against the idea said it would "make an already cranky, uncomfortable travel experience exponentially worse". Calls would not be allowed during take-off and landing. But the rule change would be the... [read news]

Jury orders Samsung to pay Apple another $290 million

A California jury has ordered Samsung to pay Apple $290 million dollars more for infringing on its patents. Thursday's ruling is the latest judgment in a serpentine case that has been ongoing for more than two years. In August 2012, the Korean smartphone maker was found to have violated several of Apple's patents, and a jury ruled that Samsung owed Apple more than $1 billion in damages. U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh later said the jury... [read news]

Report: Next iPhone could have curved screen

Apple is developing iPhones with curved-glass screens and enhanced sensors that detect different levels of pressure, according to a new report. Two models — with screens of 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches —are in the works, and both would use glass that curves downward at the edges, Bloomberg reported, citing an anonymous source familiar with the plans. These screen sizes almost rival that of Samsung's Galaxy Note 3, which boasts a 5.7-inch... [read news]

A muscle car for your kitchen

The good: The Vitamix 7500 was one of the most consistently powerful blenders that we tested. It's also one of the simplest to use. The bad: With no presets and no timer, it might be a bit too simple. Also, it doesn't dominate the cheaper models as much as you'd think. The bottom line: As tempting as that freakishly powerful motor is, it's difficult to justify the $529 Vitamix over some of the more affordable competitors... [read news]

A Nexus with power, potential, and the right price

The good: The Google Nexus 5 has LTE for multiple carriers, a sleek and solid build, and an excellent price. It makes crystal-clear calls, battery life is long, and integration of Google Now is deep and wide. The bad: The Nexus 5's screen is dimmer than its competitors' and its camera struggles under auto settings. While an important OS update, Android 4.4 KitKat is more conceptual than feature-rich. The bottom line: Strong performance... [read news]

Android 4.4 Factory Images Now Available for Nexus 4, 7 (2012 and 2013), and 10

Although Google started its official rollout of Android 4.4 KitKat over the air updates to Nexus devices a few days ago, it always takes days or weeks before the updates hit most phones. For those of us who are impatient and don't care about wiping a device to get the latest version, there's another source, the factory images for Nexus devices page, home to stock images built for respective devices. Just a short while ago, Google updated... [read news]

Apple iPad mini with Retina Display: Reviewed

I suppose there’s only one way to start this review, and that’s by looking back at last year’s iPad mini review. In that review I had a section dedicated to the possibility of an iPad mini with Retina Display. The low resolution display and slow SoC were my only two real complaints about the first iPad mini. I listed a bunch of options that Apple had for the mini going forward: “Apple has preferred outright quadrupling of pixel... [read news]

Sony's PlayStation 4 goes on sale

PlayStation 4 went on sale in the United States and Canada early Friday, the first new gaming system in seven years from Sony, which desperately needs a hit. The new system, which sells for $399, won't be on shelves by itself for long. Microsoft's (MSFT, Fortune 500) rival Xbox One goes on sale in one week. Both companies are counting on strong sales through the holiday shopping season. Shoppers lined up outside many stores across... [read news]
