Report: Apple Reaches China Mobile iPhone Deal

After years of anticipation, Apple (AAPL) has reportedly signed a deal with China Mobile that would pave the way for the wireless provider’s 700 million subscribers to use iPhones. Investors have been hoping an agreement with the world’s largest wireless carrier will help juice Apple’s growth trajectory, which has been lagging for several quarters amid stiff competition in the U.S. and elsewhere. According to The Wall Street Journal... [read news]

Data haul by Android Flashlight app 'deceives' millions

Tens of millions of Android users have been "deceived" by a developer who covertly gathered personal data, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said. GoldenShores Technologies took ID and location data from the millions using its Brightest Flashlight app. The developer shared the data with ad networks but did not tell users about this practice, an FTC statement said. To settle the charges, GoldenShores has agreed to give users more control... [read news]

Apple to precisely locate shoppers within its stores using iBeacon technology

GPS will tell you how to get to the nearest Apple store. With iBeacon, Apple hopes to guide you around once you're inside, whether it's to pick up an order, upgrade to a new iPhone or shop for a pair of headphones. On Friday, Apple will begin using the technology at its 254 U.S. stores to send you messages about products, events and other information -- tailored to where you are inside, provided you have downloaded the Apple Store app and... Rare material shortages could put gadgets at risk

Modern technology is too reliant on rare materials whose scarcity could drastically set back innovation, a new report has warned. It suggested that as more and more devices are manufactured, supplies of key elements, particularly metals, will be strained. Potential substitute materials are either inadequate or non-existent, researchers said. One scientist called the findings "an important wake-up call". Andrea Sella, of University College... NSA 'tracking' hundreds of millions of mobile phones

Almost five billion mobile phone location records are logged by the NSA every day, reports the Washington Post. The data is said to help the NSA track individuals, and map who they know, to aid the agency's anti-terror work. The "dragnet surveillance" was condemned by digital rights groups who called for the NSA's snooping efforts to be reined in. The news comes as Microsoft plans to use more encryption to thwart NSA spying on it and its... [read news]

Amazon's drone delivery: How would it work?

Imaginations everywhere have been stoked since Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos announced his company plans to start offering 30-minute deliveries via drone-like "octocopters." What's not fascinating about a near future in which fleets of whirring sky robots can drop our every impulse buy on our doorstep faster than we can get Chinese delivered? (You know, aside from accidental strayings into restricted air space or the rise of the machines.) But when... [read news]

Drones used to try to smuggle contraband into jail

Drones appear to have become the latest tool for those wishing to smuggle contraband into prisons. Four people have been arrested after a remote-controlled helicopter was allegedly used to fly tobacco into Calhoun state prison, Georgia. Prison officers noticed the device hovering over the prison yard and alerted the police. A similar attempt in Canada has led a prison officers' union to call for tighter security in jails. Tobacco... All I want for Christmas is ... a flying robot

With less than a month until Christmas, toy retail experts are predicting that Santa's sleigh won't be the only thing flying through the night sky this festive season. Both international toy store Toys 'R' Us and the UK's Toy Retailers Association have named remote control flying toys among their "top toys" for Christmas 2013 -- and that's just the beginning of the flying robot invasion. Aerial bots of all sizes -- from miniature flying... [read news]
