Sebastian Vettel: World champion struggles in pre-season testing

World champion Sebastian Vettel has had a torrid start to pre-season testing, completing just 11 laps over the first two days in his new Red Bull. The German, winner of the last four titles, finished early on Wednesday after suffering an energy-recovery system failure on his Renault engine. Vettel had managed just three slow laps on the first day after Red Bull encountered problems building the car. Teams had warned that the... [read news]

Josip Simunic: Croatia defender banned for 10 matches

Croatia defender Josip Simunic will miss the 2014 World Cup after being given a 10-match ban by Fifa for discriminatory behaviour. Dinamo Zagreb's Simunic, 35, led Croatia fans in a chant with pro-Nazi connotations following their 2-0 World Cup play-off win over Iceland. "The salute was discriminatory and offended the dignity of a group of persons," Fifa said in a statement. Simunic, who denies any political intent, was... [read news]

Ashes 2013-14: England let it slip in Perth - coach David Saker

Bowling coach David Saker says England missed their opportunity on the first day of the third Ashes Test against Australia in Perth. Needing to avoid defeat to keep the series alive, England reduced the hosts to 143-5, but Steve Smith's unbeaten century helped Australia to 326-6. "We had them on the ropes and didn't finish the job," said Saker. "It's partly down to the way they played with the bat, but we didn't deliver what we... [read news]

Champions League: Neil Lennon hurt by weak Celtic performance

Neil Lennon says Celtic's "half-hearted" show in a 6-1 Champions League loss to Barcelona was "unacceptable". The defeat at the Nou Camp equalled their heaviest European loss. "I wouldn't say some players gave up but it certainly looked that way at times," said manager Lennon. "I'd never accuse a player of doing that but there were a lot of half-hearted performances out there. As a manager, that's the most disappointing aspect... [read news]

Barcelona's board of directors will vote on the plan early in the new year. Board spokesman Toni Freixa said: "We've made advances, we have all the information and we're in a position... [read news]
