'Free Birds,' movie review

Most minor animated movies are so rote that it’s worth acknowledging a strange bird like this cheerfully gonzo kid flick. It’s no masterpiece, but if you’re hoping for a family film that will keep everyone reasonably entertained, this will fly. Owen Wilson deserves much of the credit, thanks to his nimble delivery as Reggie, the only intelligent turkey on his farm. While the rest of his flock is as dumb as stuffing, a panicked Reggie... What Ender's Game Tells Us About Real Drone Pilots

News that Lionsgate is considering a TV series spinoff rather than a sequel to Ender’s Game will not sit well with many fans of the series, but there’s a clear advantage to spending more time with the Battle School featured in the movie, rather than moving along to the quieter story of Speaker for the Dead: the distinctive issues of warfare and officer training in the International Fleet give us an opportunity to spend more time... Gravity powers to number one spot at UK box office

Sci-fi movie Gravity has entered the UK and Ireland box office chart at number one after taking £6.2 million in its first four days in cinemas. The 3D film, about astronauts adrift in space, displaced last week's top film, superhero sequel Thor: The Dark World. Philomena, starring Dame Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, maintained its box office momentum at three, taking £1.2m with only a 7% drop-off in takings. Gravity was the only new... [read news]

The Avengers Effect: Thor Sequel Gets a Box-Office Boost From His Team

The Marvel machine keeps growing. Thor: The Dark World earned $86.1 million at the U.S. box office this past weekend, an improvement of more than 30 percent on the debut of the first Thor movie. The jump might have something to do with the success of the Marvel’s 2012 movie, The Avengers, which raised the profile of Thor and his evil brother Loki. Nearly every Avengers-themed sequel has made more money than its predecessor: The first Iron... [read news]

At Berkeley - A four-hour documentary about a public university, and not a minute too long.

Full (and proud) disclosure: I—like my mother before me, as a matter of fact!—am an alumna of the University of California at Berkeley. I was a Ph.D. student there during a period that sprawled over more than a decade. (Just ask my dissertation advisers.) I worked my way through grad school by teaching in whatever department had work for me, and thus managed to get my degree without accumulating any student debt, which in part accounts... [read news]

Ender’s Game - A future in which young people are both celebrities and cannon fodder.

It’s an odd week when you follow up a review of a movie about a homophobe—Jean-Marc Vallée’s excellent Dallas Buyers Club—with a review of a movie by a homophobe, or, rather, based on a best-selling book by a very prominent one. Before the release of Ender’s Game, an adaptation by writer-director Gavin Hood of the sci-fi novel by Orson Scott Card, I knew of Card primarily as an anti-gay-marriage crusader and vocal right-wing crank. In... [read news]

Thor: The Dark World - The Crocodile Dundee II of superhero films—in a good way!

In the long, important, trillion-dollar history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 2011’s Thor represented its first semi-risk. Iron Man, the 2008 film that launched the franchise, introduced a character who wasn’t terribly well-known outside the comic book shop, but it starred Robert Downey Jr. right when America needed him back. The Incredible Hulk cast an Oscar-winning actor as pop culture’s most famous humanoid monster... [read news]
