'Nymphomaniac II' banned from cinemas in Romania

The Romanian cinema board has declared Lars von Trier's "Nymphomaniac II" unfit for public viewing, a decision the distributor says is unique in Europe. The movie was due to be released Feb. 7 but the National Center of Cinematography on Wednesday told the distributor the film would be labeled IM 18 XXX — banned to minors and the general public. Distributor Independence Film called it "a case of censorship which is unique in Europe,"... [read news]

Robert Redford not upset by Oscar snub, focusing on Sundance Film Festival

Robert Redford is far more excited about the beginning of the 30th Sundance Film Festival than concerned about his Oscar snub for "All is Lost." The 77-year-old actor-director-producer discussed the Academy Award nominations Thursday on the first day of the independent film festival in Park City, Utah. Redford is the only actor in the film, playing a shipwreck survivor struggling to stay alive. He said he loved the experience of making... [read news]

Bruno Mars preps for Superbowl

Everyone is in Bruno Mars' ear about one thing when it comes to performing the Super Bowl halftime show: How will you deal with the freezing cold? "Everyone's putting the fear in god in me like there's going to be a blizzard," Mars said in a phone interview this month from Los Angeles, asking about the weather conditions in the New York-New Jersey area for his "research." "I'm going to wear a beekeeper suit, I don't know," he answered... [read news]

'Desolation of Smaug' review: Vast improvement over first 'Hobbit,' but cliffhanger could rile

“The Hobbit” has been saved… at least for the time being. “The Desolation of Smaug” is a vast improvement over the first installment and is an excellent return to the level of quality as “The Lord of the Rings.” A possible reason for this “Hobbit’s” greatness is that it only covers the middle portion of the book -- the parts with all the action. How this will all play out in the long run remains to be seen. Splitting a... [read news]

'Saving Mr. Banks' review: Emma Thompson, Tom Hanks perfect in year's best film

“Saving Mr. Banks” is just about as perfect as they come. A spoonful of sugar, a dazzling ensemble led by Emma Thompson’s brilliant performance, a story that captures the joy and heartache of creation, memory and preservation boosted by gorgeous cinematography, the nostalgia of the wonderful Sherman brothers’ classic songs, combined with Thomas Newman’s bittersweet original score, makes this a sweetheart of a picture.  It’s... New documentary ‘Tricked’ illuminates disturbing human trafficking culture in the US

Modern-day slavery is very much alive right here in our own backyard, according to a new feature-length documentary, "Tricked." Embedded with the Denver Vice squad and combing through Las Vegas, directors John-Keith Wasson and Jane Wells bring audiences right into the frightening fold as thousands of victims are trafficked throughout the United States each year to satisfy a $3 billion-a-year industry. "I read an article stating that... [read news]

Is ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ a good way to learn about the life of Nelson Mandela?

The mood was somber after a screening of “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” in London on Thursday, as the attendees—who included Prince William and Nelson Mandela’s daughter, Zindzi — were informed of the former South African president’s death. “Zindzi learned about [her father’s death] minutes before the screening actually took place,” Us Weekly film reporter Charles Thorp told FOX411. “They asked her if she wanted to go... Too fast and furious: Some say Hollywood needs to take more responsibility for its action films

In a sad twist of fate this past weekend, Paul Walker – the star of the “Fast & Furious” film franchise – was killed alongside friend Roger Rodas in an explosive car crash in Santa Clarita, Calif. But as life seemingly imitates art, many are questioning how much responsibility Hollywood movies like “Fast” carry when it comes to glorifying reckless driving. “Movies are about fantasy, but they have real-life impact. The lesson... [read news]

‘Out of the Furnace’ review: Bale, Affleck and Harrelson shine but flick falls short

Rooted in gritty nostalgia of 1970s cinema, “Out of the Furnace” trudges the trenches of survival in a modern-day destitute Pittsburgh suburb. With close resemblance in location and tone to the Oscar-winning classic “The Deer Hunter,” “Out of the Furnace,” written and directed by Scott Cooper (“Crazy Heart”) begins as an exploration of hardships: one of struggling to survive in a mill-town on the verge of collapse and the...
