'Ridiculous': Boehner blasts conservative groups over budget complaints

House Speaker John Boehner stepped into the ring with the conservative flank Wednesday, calling their complaints about the newly unveiled budget plan "ridiculous."  The speaker was reacting to groups like FreedomWorks which have blasted the budget "deal" as a farce that jacks up spending in the short-term in exchange for promises of additional cuts years from now.  Boehner, trying to keep the complaints at bay long enough to win support... Military watchdog to re-open probe of $34M facility built in Afghanistan but never used

The independent auditor who postponed a probe into a $34 million "white elephant" of a military facility the Pentagon built in Afghanistan over objections from top leaders is reopening his investigation. Mexico: Stolen radioactive material found

A pair of thieves in Mexico may have stolen more than they bargained for when they targeted a truck this week. The stolen vehicle was carrying delicate cargo -- a radioactive element used for medical purposes that also can be used to make a so-called dirty bomb. Mexican authorities said they'd found the stolen truck and at least some of the radioactive cobalt on Wednesday. But officials aren't sure whether any of the cobalt is missing... [read news]

White House launching new ObamaCare push, as GOP sees 2014 opening

His party's political fortunes and his own legacy on the line, President Obama is launching a campaign on Tuesday to once again sell the benefits of ObamaCare to the public, and try to head off a backlash in 2014.  Republicans already are threatening to tar the Democratic Party with the health care law's troubled rollout. Obama, meanwhile, is in danger of becoming what Nancy Pelosi was in 2010 -- a party leader whom endangered Democrats... [read news]

Joe Biden to visit Japan, China as air zone dispute smolders

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden will visit Japan and China this week as a dispute seethes over Beijing's recent claim of a large swath of airspace in the region. The Chinese declaration less than two weeks ago has prompted a war of words between governments and flights through the contested air zone by military planes from the United States, China, Japan and South Korea. The uneasy situation in the skies over the East China Sea has raised... [read news]
