'Nymphomaniac II' banned from cinemas in Romania

The Romanian cinema board has declared Lars von Trier's "Nymphomaniac II" unfit for public viewing, a decision the distributor says is unique in Europe. The movie was due to be released Feb. 7 but the National Center of Cinematography on Wednesday told the distributor the film would be labeled IM 18 XXX — banned to minors and the general public. Distributor Independence Film called it "a case of censorship which is unique in Europe,"... [read news]

Fever treatments may cause more flu deaths

People sick with the flu often take medication to alleviate the accompanying fever. But their relief may come at a price for others: New findings suggest that suppressing fever can result in the infection of tens of thousands of additional people each flu season. Fever, though unpleasant, can actually be beneficial. The condition can lower the amounts of virus in a sick person's body, because viruses replicate less efficiently in higher... [read news]

Obama to order NSA phone data limits, announce other changes to spy agency's programs

President Obama will call Friday for ending the National Security Agency’s ability to store phone data from millions of Americans. Instead, he will ask Congress and the Justice Department who should hold these records, according to White House sources. New iPhone game warns of dangers of surveillance state

As Edward Snowden’s revelations about the ever-expanding reach of the National Security Agency continue to make headlines, one videogame developer is using a new iPhone game to speak out against what some call a new surveillance state -- by imagining the horrors such a state would bring. “Republique,” a Kickstarter project released this month by small developer Camouflaj, is an episodic stealth game in which the player must guide a... DOJ enters 'knockout game' fray with hate crime charge -- why now?

The Justice Department's decision to charge a white man with a federal hate crime for a "knockout game"-style attack against a black victim has raised questions about why the administration waited until now to speak up on cases that, for months, largely have involved white victims.  Federal prosecutors presented a detailed set of evidence Thursday in charging Katy, Texas, man Conrad Alvin Barrett, 27, with a hate crime. He allegedly shot... [read news]

Task force calls for new NSA limits

The advisory board tasked with reviewing National Security Agency policies pushed Wednesday to rein in NSA spying on several fronts, recommending in its final report that the agency be stripped of its ability to store Americans' telephone records.  The presidential advisory panel recommended dozens of changes to the government's surveillance programs. Among them, it also called for requiring a court to sign off on the individual searches... [read news]

‘Complete waste’: Army Corps flushed $5.4M on ‘unusable’ trash incinerators, probe finds

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers paid $5.4 million for shoddy trash incinerators that were delivered years behind schedule and never used, leaving soldiers at an Afghanistan base with no other option than to keep burning waste in open-air pits, according to an internal probe. The report from Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction John F. Sopko was released Monday. It found the failure to complete the trash incinerators... [read news]

Senators introduce bill to crack down on 'lavish' portrait expenses

A bipartisan Senate duo says they want to crack down on what they call the government’s “lavish” spending on oil paintings of congressmen, the costs of which can top $50,000 each. Sens. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., and Tom Coburn, R-Okla., said in a Thursday press release they are introducing a bill that would only allow $20,000 of taxpayer funds to be spent on each portrait, and would only cover paintings of lawmakers in the line of...
