‘Out of the Furnace’ review: Bale, Affleck and Harrelson shine but flick falls short

Rooted in gritty nostalgia of 1970s cinema, “Out of the Furnace” trudges the trenches of survival in a modern-day destitute Pittsburgh suburb. With close resemblance in location and tone to the Oscar-winning classic “The Deer Hunter,” “Out of the Furnace,” written and directed by Scott Cooper (“Crazy Heart”) begins as an exploration of hardships: one of struggling to survive in a mill-town on the verge of collapse and the... Ashes 2013-14: Graeme Swann - no blame over dropped catches

England's Graeme Swann said individuals would not be blamed despite three key dropped catches as Australia closed day one of the second Test on 273-5. Monty Panesar, Joe Root and Michael Carberry all missed chances in Adelaide but Swann said: "Nobody's going to be hard on anyone else. "We know how hard we all work on our fielding, and we'll come back tomorrow and hopefully take those half-chances. "If we can keep them below 350, we'll be... [read news]

Xbox One dominates PlayStation 4 in Black Friday console war

Can’t we all just get along?  Some have issued a call for peace but the next-generation console war is inevitable. PlayStation 4 fans and Xbox One fans have their own war going, and market research firms and other industry watchers will constantly pit the two consoles against each other as they fight for sales. While the PS4 undoubtedly took an early lead since it launched a week ahead of Microsoft’s new console, it looks like the... [read news]

Martin Jol has been sacked by Fulham, with head coach Rene Meulensteen taking responsibility for the first team. All I want for Christmas is ... a flying robot

With less than a month until Christmas, toy retail experts are predicting that Santa's sleigh won't be the only thing flying through the night sky this festive season. Both international toy store Toys 'R' Us and the UK's Toy Retailers Association have named remote control flying toys among their "top toys" for Christmas 2013 -- and that's just the beginning of the flying robot invasion. Aerial bots of all sizes -- from miniature flying... [read news]

Clashes continue for 2nd day in Ukraine after it pulls out of talks with EU

Ukrainians angry at their government's last-minute decision to suspend talks with the EU clashed for a second day with police in the capital Kiev on Monday. A day earlier, tens of thousands of protesters tried to break through a cordon around government buildings. On both occasions, police responded with batons and tear gas to disperse them. At the heart of the protests is Ukraine's about-turn after a year of insisting that it was intent... [read news]

What does Alec Baldwin have to do with cloud computing?

What was Alec Baldwin doing at a cloud computing conference in San Francisco? Delighting fans (and getting paid to do so) in an effort to smooth over his most recent public relations flap in which the 30 Rock actor was accused of yelling a gay slur at a photographer. Baldwin disputes the account, but the details mattered little here at the Salesforce.com (CRM) Dreamforce conference in San Francisco, where the actor received a warm reception... Opposition to mobile phone chat on planes

A proposal to allow mobile phone calls during commercial flights has met opposition. The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has suggested that passengers should be allowed to make calls once a plane reaches 10,000 feet. But one petition against the idea said it would "make an already cranky, uncomfortable travel experience exponentially worse". Calls would not be allowed during take-off and landing. But the rule change would be the... [read news]
