'Doctor Who' turns 50 and fans' lives will never be the same

In 1996, John Reid Adams received a phone call that changed his life. His oldest brother wanted him to record the movie that was airing on Fox one Tuesday night. "I just did it to avoid a beating," Adams admitted. As the eighth-grader surfed the Internet, he continued to get distracted by the movie unfolding on TV. He saw a British police box from the 1950s -- actually a disguised spaceship known as a "TARDIS" -- on the screen. "This blue... [read news]

‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ ignites with more mature Jennifer Lawrence

The opening of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” finds its heroine, Katniss Everdeen, crouching uneasily at the edge of a lake, bow in hand, unsure of who and where her enemies are. Although she is supposedly safe in her home turf of District 12, the young woman is clearly haunted, a veteran of death. Director Francis Lawrence’s close-up style immediately thrusts the viewer into Katniss’ chaotic world. The first movie adaptation... [read news]

The Best Man Holiday and the Wisdom of Box Office Counterprogramming

Thor: The Dark World may have ultimately emerged on top, but the real story at the box office this past weekend was the surprising strength of a sequel without superpowers. The Best Man Holiday grossed an estimated $30.6 million from 2,024 theaters for an impressive $15,115 per-screen average—and it actually beat Thor on Friday, taking $10.7 million to the Norse god’s $10.5 million. Those are excellent numbers by any measure. The film... [read news]

PSA: Battlefield 4 Commander app now free on iTunes

Controlling the flow of combat in Battlefield 4 just became a bit more convenient thanks to the launch of the iOS Tablet Commander app. While the app won't be of much help in a straight up firefight, it does allow players to take control of the game's Commander mode from the comfort of the nearest iPad. Digital Foundry tests Dead Rising 3, finds framerate lacking

The technically minded editors at Eurogamer's Digital Foundry spent some hands-on time with Dead Rising 3, Capcom Vancouver's upcoming Xbox One exclusive, and found a handful of framerate and rendering issues in the next-gen title. Digital Foundry confirmed that the game runs at a native 720p, and that the Xbox One upscales the game to 1080p.
