Argentina's embassy in London said new laws had been passed by the country's congress to clamp down on exploration it claims is in breach of UN decisions. The UK's Foreign Office insisted the activities were legitimately controlled by the islands' government. Islanders recently voted overwhelmingly... [read news]

Premature baby steroids 'may raise risk of ADHD'

Steroids given to help premature babies develop may also be slightly increasing the risk of mental health disorders, say researchers. The drugs are often given to pregnant mothers at risk of a premature birth to help the baby's lungs prepare for life outside the womb. The study, in the journal PLoS One, showed there was a higher risk of attention disorders at age eight. The charity Bliss said it reinforced the need for regular health... [read news]

He has been turned down by planes, trains and even a cruise ship in his quest to return home — and his family says it’s because he has been deemed too fat to travel. Or it might come with pull tabs so a man could slip it on with little fuss. Those ideas are among the winners announced Wednesday by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation of a contest to create a condom that men would actually use. The contest, the foundation said, aimed to decrease unintended pregnancies and... [read news]

Thousands of children 'driven in smoky cars'

More than 430,000 children aged 11-15 in England are exposed to second-hand smoke in their family cars at least once a week, says a charity. The estimate, from the British Lung Foundation, comes as the House of Lords prepares to debate a ban on smoking in cars where children are present. Smokers' lobby group Forest says the data is misleading and a ban "disproportionate to the problem". The figures are extrapolated from a poll of 7,500... [read news]
